Measurement methodology

How we measure the loop

One number matters here: how many people, in a month, have at least one credible contribution in two or more stewardship pillars. Not time spent, not posts, not followers.

What a pillar is

Every record in an Impact Passport has a type, and each type belongs to one pillar — or to none.

A reflection and a saved story count for nothing. They are memory and intent, and counting them would make writing about yourself a way to move the number.

What makes a record credible

Credible means somebody other than the account holder confirmed it. That is the whole rule.

An estimate is not a measurement. That is the same rule the walking-emissions method states, and it has a consequence worth being plain about: the Earth pillar cannot reach the headline figure today, because its only source is an estimate. We would rather say that than quietly promote estimates so the number moves.

Two figures, never added together

Every counter reports the credible figure and the same figure including self-reported records, side by side. They are never summed and never shown as one number. A self-reported record is a real thing somebody did; it is simply not evidence, and the gap between the two columns is the most useful thing on the chart.

What we deliberately do not count

  • Time spent in the app, session length, or session count.
  • Posts, likes, comments, followers, or any social volume.
  • Screens viewed or taps.
  • Any total score. There is no score.
  • Notifications sent or delivered. Sending you something is a cost we impose, not an achievement.

Where the figures come from

From the records in people’s Impact Passports, aggregated in the database — never from analytics events, which only tell us that a screen appeared. Records that have been revoked or reversed are excluded from both figures.

Counts are counts. No figure published here identifies anyone, and private records are aggregated but never displayed, quoted, or shared.

Expect zero, for now

Recording a contribution someone else confirms is new, and the catalogue is small. The headline figure will read zero until the loop actually closes for real people. That is the number doing its job.
